Hip-hop pedagogy encourages educators to recognize and highlight the brilliance, ingenuity, and creativity of hip-hop—a culture created by Black and historically marginalized communities—through curriculum choices and instructional decisions.
About the Project
The Hip-Hop Pedagogy Project is a national community committed to strengthening the practice and advancing the scholarship of hip-hop education. The Project creates accessible, year-round opportunities for educators and scholars to gather, exchange ideas, develop their work, and contribute to the continued growth of the field.
The Project recognizes hip-hop as more than music or an engagement strategy. Hip-hop is a culture, a source of knowledge, and a framework through which educators can affirm identity, cultivate critical consciousness, inspire creativity, and create more humanizing and liberatory learning experiences for all.
Through virtual gatherings, the Hip-Hop Pedagogy Project supports two interconnected communities: Hip-Hop Pedagogy Project Practitioners and Hip-Hop Pedagogy Project Scholars.
Open to anyone interested in hip-hop education, the Project offers an accessible space for connection, collaboration, and collective learning. Its goal is to build the community and infrastructure necessary to move hip-hop education forward.

Edmund Adjapong, Ph.D.
Founder, Hip-Hop Pedagogy Project
Edmund Adjapong, Ph.D., is a dynamic educator, author, scholar, and community-based practitioner whose innovative approach to teaching leverages hip-hop culture as a transformative tool in educational spaces. He is the Director of the Hip-Hop Culture, Equity, and Excellence Academy and Associate Professor of Educational Studies at Seton Hall University. His research and practice sit at the intersection of culturally responsive pedagogy, youth culture, and equity-driven education, focused on how hip-hop can connect with students, foster positive educational outcomes, and challenge systemic inequities within K–12 schools and beyond.
Our Communities
The Hip-Hop Pedagogy Project supports two interconnected virtual communities. Everyone is welcome to explore both.
A virtual community for educators, teaching artists, community educators, and school leaders interested in implementing hip-hop across educational spaces. Through regular gatherings, participants share practices and experiences, explore classroom strategies, and take part in workshops centered on hip-hop culture, student identity, creativity, and critical consciousness.
Register for a Practitioner GatheringA virtual research and writing community for scholars, graduate students, and practitioner-researchers working in hip-hop education. Through regular gatherings, participants discuss emerging research, share works in progress, exchange feedback, strengthen scholarly ideas, and build relationships that advance the field.
